The scientific council of the ZFHC is set up to advice the Managing Council on the scientific and research work to be undertaken by the foundation in fulfillment of the objectives.

Dr. Satyabrata Maiti - Chairman

Dr. Satyabrata Maiti did his Ph. D. in Agriculture. He joined ICAR as a scientist in 1977 and subsequently occupied various positons such as Project Coordinator of two All India Coordinated Projects and finally retired from the post of Director, Directorate of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Research, Boriavi, Anand, Gujarat. Dr. Maiti has made a pioneering contribution in the area of MAPs. He has developed two varieties and three hybrids of betel vine and the variety Bidhan Pan developed by his team is very popular and in cultivation in large areas of West Bengal, Orissa and Assam. His Integrated Crop Management Module incorporating crop, insect pest and disease management technologies has contributed to the sustained production of betel vine. He has to his credit seven unique germplasm lines of MAPs (two of Chlorophytum borivilianum, two of Aloe barbadensis, one of Tinospora cordifolia, one of Andrographis paniculata and one of Centella asiatica) and a variety of Centella asiatica named “Vallabh Medha”. His other significant contributions are micropropagation protocols for large scale production of Aloe barbadensis, Chlorophytum borivilianum and C. arundinaceum and a patent on “Improved method of preparation of aloin”. Dr Maiti has over 150 publications to his credit including 110 research papers in national and international journals. He has published nine books and has been the founder editor of the Journal of Oilseeds crop (1983-1988). He was also the editor-in-chief of Open Access Journal of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants. He is fellow of several professional societies such as FNABS; FIPS; FISOR. He has served Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) as International Consultant in Afghanistan, Bhutan, China and Egypt. He also visited South Africa and Japan as leader of Indian delegation in Plenary Meeting of ISO/TC 249. In addition, he represented India in IBPGRI, Malaysia, Moscow and Nepal on various scientific fora. After his retirement in 2014, he served as an International Expert in Bangladesh for two missions in a ADB Funded Project and International Consultant of FAO in China (3-missions). At present, he is working as Consultant in a project preparation team of World Bank-FAO for CHIRAG in Chhattisgarh and Expert Consultant with Quality Council of India for GAP and GFCP of medicinal plants.

Dr. Chandra Kant Katiyar - Member

Born on September 27, 1954, Dr. Chandra Kant Katiyar is MD in Ayurveda and Ph. D. Pharmacology/Rasa Shastra from Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India. This unique combination of Ayurvedic and Modern Medicine knowledge has helped him in interpreting Ayurvedic principles and practices in modern scientific language. For the last more than 28 years Dr. Katiyar has worked at India’s best Research and Development driven companies Like Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd, Gurgaon as Director, Herbal Drug Research and Dabur India Ltd as Head and Vice President of Dabur Research and Development Centre, NCR Delhi. Currently Dr Katiyar is CEO Health Care (Technical) of Emami Ltd. at Kolkata, India. During his tenure Dr. Katiyar has developed several of top selling Ayurvedic /herbal OTC and Ethical products besides pharmaceutical products in the field of Neurology and Oncology. He has also made significant contributions in New Drug Discovery from medicinal plants. Dr. Katiyar has authored books including “Ayurveda at the turning point” published from UK in 2018 and “Modern Ayurveda: Milestones Beyond the Classical Age” published by CRC Press, USA in 2012. He has contributed more than 10 book chapters, about 75 research papers and has about 20 patents to his credit. Dr. Katiyar is member of making ASU Drugs Technical Advisory Board, Governing body, All India Institute of Ayurveda, Delhi, Scientific Advisory Board, Central Council for Research in Ayurveda Sciences and Scientific Advisory Group, Indian Council of Medical Research. He is currently Vice Chairman of National Phytopharmaceutical Mission of Department of Bio Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. Dr. Katiyar has made important contributions in quality control of Ayurvedic/ Herbal drugs being member of Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia Committee, Herbal Committee for Indian Pharmacopoeia and South East Asia Expert Panel on Dietary Supplements for United States Pharmacopoeia. Dr. Katiyar is a reputed researcher, academician and expert in regulatory policies for Traditional Medicines including Ayurveda.

Dr. Mohd. Aslam - Member

Dr. Mohd. Aslam is M. Sc., M. Phil. and Ph. D. in Botany and currently working as Advisor (Scientist ‘G’) in the Department of Biotechnology (DBT). He is involved in planning, coordination and monitoring of various R&D programmes in the areas of Bioresources, Environmental Biotechnology and Bio-energy Sciences. Currently, he is heading the Division of Bioresources, Environmental Biotechnology and Energy Biosciences along with Biotech Initiatives in North East Region. He is also Coordinator for International Partnership Programmes in DBT. He is working as the scientific coordinator of four DBT institutions – Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), Imphal, Manipur; International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), New Delhi; National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute (NABI), Mohali and Center of Innovative and Applied Bioprocessing (CIAB), Mohali. He is Managing Director of Biotech Industry and Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), New Delhi and Director in Bharat Immunologicals and Biologicals Corporation Limited (BIBCOL) and Indian Vaccine Corporation Ltd. (IVCOL).

Dr Neeraj Tandon - Member

Dr Neeraj Tandon is working as a Scientist G (Senior Deputy Director General) at Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). She is heading the planning, coordination, monitoring and implementation of the various Research Programmes/Activities under the Publication and Information and Medicinal Plants Divisions of the Indian Council of Medical Research, New Delhi. She has vast experience of more than 38 years in the area of biomedical research, policy, planning, publication & information, education, communication & research management. Her primary research areas includes Medicinal Plants and Traditional Medicine programmes under the Division, employing multidisciplinary, multifaceted approach, through intramural and extramural programmes consolidating research efforts made in the country in these areas so as to facilitate the development of safe, effective and standard drugs for various diseases where there is no satisfactory cure in Allopathic system of medicine. Also promotes, plans and coordinates, collaborative research in the area of medicinal plants besides providing documented evidence for patents/IPR. Principal Investigator of the two major projects viz., the Reviews on Indian Medicinal Plants and Quality Standards of Indian Medicinal Plants running at the ICMR besides a number of other projects running under the Division. Has more than 50 publications to her credit. Is a WHO Fellow on Medicinal Plants Information Systems at the Department of Medical Chemistry College of Pharmacy, University of Illinois, Chicago. Member of the Pharmexcil-IPC-USP Advisory Panel on Monographs for herbal ingredients and products. The Advisory Panel is under the USP Dietary Supplements- Botanicals expert committee monitors and considers science, technical and policy issues associated with acquisition of monographs and candidate reference standard materials for dietary supplements in the US corresponding to Ayush medicines in India. She is carrying out various Multicentric Task Force projects including Development of a Standardized formulation for preventing or delaying the development of type 2 diabetes in subject with pre-Diabetes; Development of a plant drug for treatment of Sleep disorders and other InterMinisterial Programmes. She is the member of various Scientific societies/academies and has received various awards and prizes.

Dr. Rajendra T. Desai - Member

Born on 27 February 1951, Dr. Rajendra T. Desai did his M. Sc. and Ph. D. in Plant Breeding and Genetics from Navsari Agriculture University, Navsari, Gujarat. Later on he joined Navari Agriculture University and retired as Professor and Head, Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics, NM college of Agriculture, NAU, Navsari. Dr. Desai has published one book, 12 research papers and 8 Gujarati articles. He has supervised 18 M. Sc. and 8 Ph. D. students. Dr. Desai also released one variety of turmeric ‘GTN -1’.

Born on 24 February, 1957, Mr. Dilip Poddar did his B. Com (Hons.) from Kolkata University, Kolkata. He is presently working as Vice President (Co-ordination) with Emami Ltd., Mumbai. Mr. Poddar has experience in International Market specifically in Sub Sahara Africa/ USA / Canada / Latin America / Australia / New Zealand for personal care, cosmetics, nutrition and wellness. He is also experienced in product and process innovation, packaging development, and in export of goods.

Dr. J. M. Pathak - Member

Born on 26 November, 1950, Dr. J. M. Pathak did his Ph. D. in plant taxonomy from Mumbai University, Mumbai. He joined Zandu Pharmaceutical, Mumbai in 1981 and ZFHC right from its inception in 1990-91. At present, he is working as consultant to ZFHC. His specialization is plants and plant drugs identification apart from cultivation of medicinal plants. He is a recognized guide for Ph. D. and M. Sc. degree in Botany and Biotechnology by Mumbai University, Mumbai and Uka Tarsadia University, Bardoli, Gujarat and have guided 170 students at M. Sc. And M. Pharma level and guided 4 students for Ph. D. degree. He has published one book in two volumes of “Flora of Saurastra” and has published 17 scientific papers in National and International journals.

Prof. V. K. Kapoor - Member

Born on July 10, 1943, Dr. Kapoor is Ph. D. from Punjab University, Punjab and currently working as Professor (Adjunct), in GHG Khalsa College of Pharmacy, Gurusar, Ludhiana. Dr. Kapoor has experience of over 45 years in medicinal and pharmaceutical chemistry and chemistry of natural products. He served as Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Punjab University (1988-2005), as Dean, Faculty of Pharmacy and Allied, Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar (2009-2012) as Principal and, G.H.G. Khalsa College of Pharmacy, Gurusar Sadhar, Ludhiana (2005-2015). Dr. Kapoor also served as Commonwealth Academic Staff Fellow, School of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, University of Bath, UK during 1983-1984. Dr. Kapoor has received Academic Excellence Award 2016 of the Association of Pharmacy Professionals, Shri Bhojraj Panjamool Life Time Achievement Award 2011 of the Association of Pharmaceutical Teachers of India, Shiksha Bharti Puraskar 2011 of All India Achievers Foundation, New Delhi, Professor G.P. Srivastava Memorial Award 2004 of the Association of Pharmaceutical Teachers of India, Bangalore, Indian Pharmaceutical Association Fellowship 2003. Dr. Kapoor has supervised 5 doctorates and 33 master thesis and has published 140 papers including 8 books, 15 book chapters (13 in International Book Series), 30 review papers, 45 original research papers, 16 papers on pharmaceutical education, 12 general scientific papers, 15 articles of professional interest and one directory. He also co-authored a comprehensive monograph on Medicinal Chemistry Research in India (NICDAP, Lucknow).

Born on 08 April 1956, Prof. Nautiyal is Ph. D. in Plant Physiology from HNB Garhwal University, Srinagar, Garhwal, Uttarakhand. For the last more than 38 years Prof. Nautiyal has worked as Research Officer, Senior Research Officer, Lecturer, Reader, Professor and Director at High Altitude Plant Physiology Research Centre, Srinagar Garhwal. Prof. Nautiyal also served as Dean, School of Agriculture and Allied Sciences, HNB Garhwal University (Central Univ.), January 2014-2017; Registrar (as OSD, Administration), HNB Garhwal University (Central Univ.) (2009), OSD (Development and Planning), HNB Garhwal University (Central Univ.) (2012-2015), Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, HNB Garhwal University (State University) (2004-2007) and as Scientist In-charge - G.B. Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment and Development, Garhwal Unit (1993). Prof. Nautiyal retired from the post of Director, HAPPRC, Srinagar, Garhwal in 2021. Prof. Nautiyal has supervised 22 scholars for their Ph.D. out of which 19 theses are awarded while 2 are under guidance. 22 M. Phil. thesis are also awarded under his supervision. Prof. Nautiyal has undertaken 11 projects funded by DBT, SMPB, NMPB, MNES and MOEF. Prof. Nautiyal has published 125 research papers, 3 review papers, 3 bulletins / monographs, 2 book chapters and has edited 1 book.

Dr. Pulok K. Mukherjee - Member

Born on December 1968, Prof. Mukherjee is Ph. D. in Pharmaceutical Technology from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. Prof. Mukherjee is working as the Director, Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), Imphal, Manipur. His research/academic works highlights on traditional medicine inspired drug discovery from Indian medicinal plants to make them available from ‘Farm to Pharma’. He has been working as the Director School of Natural Product Studies and Professor (On lien), Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India. He has made several innovative and outstanding contributions in academic and research in the area of natural product studies, Ethnopharmacology and evidence based validation of herbs used in AYUSH, India. Prof. Mukherjee is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), Fellow of National Academy of Sciences, India (FNASc), Fellow of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, India (FNAAS); Fellow of the West Bengal Academy of Sciences (FWAST). He has been awarded with the Commonwealth Academic Staff Fellowship from Association of Commonwealth Universities [ACU], UK; TATA innovation fellowship, by Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India; Outstanding Service Award from Drug Information association [DIA], USA; Career Award for Young Teacher from All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Govt. of India; Best Pharmaceutical Scientist of the Year, from the Association of Pharmaceutical Teachers’ of India (APTI); IASTAM Award for Contributions to Development of Ayurvedic and Herbal Pharmaceutics by Indian Association for the Study of Traditional Asian Medicine (IASTAM) and many others. He is the Secretary of the Society for Ethnopharmacology, India (SFE-India) and President, International Society for Ethnopharmacology (ISE), Switzerland. He has to his credit more than 220 publications in peer reviewed impact journals, with Citations for over 22000, h-index of 70, i10-index over 300, several patents. Prof. Mukherjee has also authored/edited 6 books and 18 book chapters, recently he has been honored at the list of Top 2% of the scientist/authors of the world based on the independent survey made by a group form Stanford USA. Prof. Mukherjee is serving as the Consulting Editor of Pharmacological Research, Associate Editor of the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, Phytomedicine-Plus Elsevier Science. He is the member of the editorial board of several International journals including Phytomedicine, Pharmaceutical analysis, Synergy; Phytochemical Analysis, World Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, India J Traditional Knowledge and many others. Dr. R. Krishnamurthy - Member

Born on 12th May 1958, Dr. Krishnamurthy did his Ph. D. in Botany in 1988 from the M S University of Baroda, Gujarat and has 28 years of experience in teaching & research including 13 years of experience in Industrial research. Dr. Krishnamurthy has served as Director at Zandu Foundation for Health Care (ZFHC), Gujarat (1995-2007) and Director, Bhagwan Mahavir College of M. Sc. Biotechnology, Surat, India (2007-2011). Currently, Dr. Krishnamurthy working as Professor & Director, C.G. Bhakta Institute of Bio Technology; Dean of Faculty of Science, Uka Tarsadia University, Bardoli, Surat since 2011. Dr. Krishnamurthy is also serving as Visiting Professor to University of Ilorin, Nigeria. He is Fellow of Chartered Institute of Environmental and Public Health Management of Nigeria. Dr. Krishnamurthy is also serving or served as member of Academic Council, Board of Studies and Senate at Veer Narmad South Gujarat University, Surat, India(2007 – 2011); Member of Board of Management, Governing Body, Academic Council and Board of Studies at Uka Tarsadia University, Bardoli, Surat, India 2011 – Till date; National Society of Ethnopharmacology (NSE), India, Society for Ethnopharmacology (SFE), Kolkatta and Association of Microbiologists of India (AMI). Dr. Krishnamurthy also received technology award(in the year 2002) from Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India for his pioneer work on development of new line of Mucuna pruriens. Dr. Krishnamurthy is also serving as member, Gujarat Medicinal Plants Board, Gandhinagar since 2014. Dr. Krishnamurthy has organized several national and international conferences and workshops as Chairman. He has also organized many Farmer’s training and workshops for cultivation of medical plants at Uka Tarsadia University. Dr. Krishnamurthy has so far completed 7 Govt. funded projects and 3 foreign companies supported projects. He has filed one patent to his credit jointly with RRL Jammu. Dr. Krishnamurthy has published a total of 145 research papers in different national and international journals having 116 research paper and 29 review papers, and 9 book chapters. Dr. Krishnamurthy is reviewer of research articles of many reputed scientific journals. Dr. Krishnamurthy also supervised 8 Ph. D. students and currently 6 students are pursuing their Ph. D. under his supervision. He has also guided over 75 MSc dissertation students.

Dr. Ramesh Srivastava - Member

Dr RK Srivastava was born in July 7, 1973, he did his Ph. D. in Botany from CSIR-CIMAP Lucknow (2002), and MBA (Marketing) from Sikkim Manipal University (2011). He also pursued Post Graduate Diploma in Agriculture Extension from MANAGE, Hyderabad in 2013. Now, he has more than last 20 years experience in the area of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants. Dr. Srivastava has worked as Dy. Manager in Deepak Fertilizers & Petrochemicals Corporation Ltd., Pune (Maharashtra) from 2021-2002; Scientific Officer (Agro), Extension officer (Agro) and Assistant Director (Agro) in Fragrance and Flavour Development Centre (FFDC), Min. of MSME, Govt. of India, Kannauj (UP) from 2002-2016. Presently, Dr. Srivastava is working as Senior Scientist and Head Business Development at CSIR-Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, Lucknow from 2016. Dr. Srivastava has appreciated by the Govt. of Gujarat for his pioneer work on popularization of cultivation and processing of industrial crops (medicinal and aromatic) among tribal people of tropical and sub-tropical region of India. He was also instrumental to enhancing farmer’s income in North East region of India and Bundelkhand area under Aroma Mission and DBT sponsored projects. Dr. Srivastava has implemented several Govt. funded projects related to rural development. Dr. Srivastava has also published 41 research papers, 5 technical bulletin, 7 technical reports, 1 book, 2 book chapter and 8 training manuals. He also has 2 patent granted in India and US to his credit.

Dr. R. S. Thakor - Member

Born on August 1965, Dr. Thakor is Ph. D. in Agriculture from Gujarat Agriculture University, Anand (1992), and PGDAEM in 2008 from MANAGE, Hyderabad. During early years of the study he has been awarded National merit scholarship and Tribal area merit schlorship . For more than last 28 years Dr. Thakor has worked as Training Associate (Ext. Edu.) in Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kutch, Gujarat (1993-1999) and Training Organizer at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kutch, Gujarat (1999-2001). At present, Dr. Thakor is working as Senior Scientist and Head, Gujarat Vidyapith Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Valsad, Gujarat since 2001. Dr. Thakor has awarded the best KVK scientist by Indian Society of Extension Education, New Delhi (2016-17), best NICRA, KVK award, best NICRA VCRMC award and many more to his credit. He has been worked as Nodal officer for NARI and DAMU projects of ICAR, New Delhi. Dr. Thakor is member of Society of Community Mobilization and Sustainable Development, New Delhi, Indian Society of Extension Education, New Delhi, Maharashtra Society of Extension Education, Rahuri, Society of Krishi Vigyan (ISKV) and Gujarat Society of Extension Education, Anand. Dr. Thakor has published 25 research papers, 57 popular articles and 36 pamphlets and delievered more than 50 radio talks on AIR, Bhuj,Daman and Vadodara. He has been associated with reviewer of Gujarat journal of extension education .

Mr. Avinash Narwaria - Member

Master of Pharmacy from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi (1994). He has more than 27 years of experience in R&D, Process Development and Product Launches with reputed Healthcare and FMCG product manufacturing companies. He has expertise in the formulation & development of products in diverse range including Ayurvedic, Pharmaceutical, Nutraceutical, Personal Care Products & Food products. He worked with Dabur India Limited for about 14 years and developed many New proprietary Ayurvedic products in the areas of healthcare, nutraceuticals and personal care. He has been one of the panelists who were involved in development of Real fruit juice range. He worked with Ranbaxy Research Laboratories in Herbal Drug Research division for 5 years and developed a range of herbal products. He also developed Chyawanprash without sugar with an innovative technique and process. He was at Paras Pharmaceuticals as head of Healthcare research & development. Here he set up their R&D lab along with developing various pharmaceutical & Ayurvedic products. Currently he is working with Emami Limited as Associate Vice President handling new product development work of healthcare division. He has wide experience in Development of new formulations, Quality specifications, Bioassay studies, Efficacy studies, Safety and Toxicity studies on herbal ingredients and their formulation. He has been a key member of core team involved in WHO-GMP (COPP) certification for more than 40 products at manufacturing units of Emami Limited. Mr. Narwaria has 10 patents to his credit and has published more than 20 research papers & two book chapters.

Dr. V. K. Bisht - Member

Born on 11th February, 1980, Dr. V. K. Bisht did his M. Sc. in Botany and Ph. D. in Plant Physiology from HNB Garhwal University, Srinagar (Garhwal), Uttarakhand. Dr. Bisht presently working as Scientist In-Charge (Assistant General Manager) at ZFHC, Ambach, Valsad. He also served as Scientist, Herbal Research and Development Institute for more than 8 years. He has a work experience of more than 16 years. Dr. Bisht also work as a researcher in UNDP-GEF project for “Inventorization of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants of Uttarakhand”. He has made a pioneering contribution in introduction and commercial cultivation of Amomum subulatum (Large Cardamom) in Uttarakhand. His research and interest focus on conservation and cultivation of medicinal plants, plant and seed physiology, phyto-chemistry, biological activity analysis and ethnobotany. Dr. Bisht has published more than 75 research papers in the national and international journals, apart from many presentations in symposia and seminars. Dr. Bisht has supervised 09 students of M. Sc., M. Pharma from different university for their dissertation work. Dr. Bisht has taken up 12 research and developmental project funded by different ministry of state and Central Government of worth ₹ 1198.37 Lakh.

Dr.R. C. Uniyal - Member Secretary

Born on 07th December 1968, Dr. R. C. Uniyal did his M. Phil (1990) in Environmental Plant Physiology and D. Phil. (1995) in Botany (Seed Biology) from High Altitude Plant Physiology Research Centre, HNB Garhwal University, Srinagar-Garhwal. Dr. Uniyal is presently working as Head, Bio-resources Development, Emami Ltd. Kolkata. He also served as Consultant to National Medicinal Plants Board, Ministry of Ayush, New Delhi. He also worked as Consultant under UNDP-GEF-MoEF project. Dr. uniyal also worked for WWF-TRAFFIC India as a researcher. He was Member of Expert Committee, which formulate Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and Good Field Collection Practices (GFCP) for Indian Medicinal Plants. He was also Member of Himalayan Task Force for Medicinal Plants constituted by NMPB (2008-09) and Member of High Power Committee under Chief Minister of Uttarakhand (2014-15) for Medicinal Plants sector in Uttarakhand. Dr. Uniyal has experience of more than 24 years and his specialized areas includes Bio-resources Management, Conservation, Cultivation, Primary Processing & Value Addition, Supply Chain Management and Procurement of herbal raw materials. Dr. Uniyal has over more than 70 research papers published in national and international journals. He has also published 03 books and have produced 01 Documentary on Medicinal Plants.
